AlphaElectric has helped Saga make considerable savings by switching some of their fleet to electric

SAGA Group is reporting major cost savings and CO2 reductions of up to eight tonnes a year after taking delivery of four Renault Kangoo ZE electric vans.

The British company turned to Alphabet’s AlphaElectric consulting service to see if it would benefit from replacing a portion of its diesel LCV fleet with battery electric vehicles.

The operating patterns and running costs of the organisation’s fleet were then monitored, recording each vehicles daily average and highest daily mileage over a ten week period. Each vehicle was compared with an equivalent plug-in vehicle to establish whether it was possible to make a positive business case for going electric.

Now after opting to replace four diesels rather than two, Saga claims it is making an overall annual saving of £1,400

The review demonstrated that by replacing two diesel vans with EVs would produce whole life cost savings of around £4,000 per vehicle as well as significant CO2 reductions.

Now after opting to replace four diesels rather than two, Saga claims it is making an overall annual saving of £1,400.

Lukas Jansen Van Vuuren, Saga’s fleet and in-house services manager, said: “To the drivers the electric vans are just like a normal vehicle.

“The drivers use them all day, plug them in to charge at night and come back the next morning and off they go.”

“As a company we are really aware of the importance of reducing emissions and we also want to keep our fleet on a sustainable path to the future,” he added.

“Alphabet’s AlphaElectric consulting team enabled us to measure and validate our vehicle options based on our own specific activities.”
