561 – Audi’s A3 performance saloon

Share

1 March 2011

WHAT’S this: a compact Audi sports saloon? Apparently so. And it looks rather good.

Audi has stuck a boot on the back of the Audi A3 to create this ‘notchback’ saloon based on the RS3 performance model. Simply called A3 concept, Audi says the A3 concept is the fastest ever production saloon, thanks to its 2.5-litre Turbo FSI petrol engine.

Interesting use of terminology: ‘production saloon’, I thought, for a concept. Certainly from the pictures, the car looks more than just well conceived but almost ready for life outside the Geneva Motor Show this week where it is being shown.

Along with its 408PS turbo engine, aluminium content in the body helps lighten weight to give the A3 concept 0-62mph capability in 4.1 seconds. So it’s a bit quick! Fuel consumption is 31mpg.

The interior looks luxuriously appointed, too, so it’s not a stripped out racer by the looks of it, but an ultrafast executive sports saloon.

Among the technologies available to the driver are the latest MMI (Multi Media Interface) including Google services and wifi hotspot capability.

Will we see it here? No word yet from Audi. Apart from that slip about the ‘fastest production saloon’…

Watch this space I reckon.
