Have you filed your VAT return online? Let’s face it, if I can do it, then I’m sure you can – it’s fairly straightforward (despite my own operator errors). And now it’s a legal requirement

I DON’T know whether you’ve done it with your business yet. But I paid my first VAT quarter online yesterday.

It had started rather badly. I had gone through all the pre-registration, received my ID and so on. But my first attempt to log on met with a failed password attempt. I kept on trying and, sure that I was putting in the correct password now (it hadn’t been originally) the portal just wouldn’t let me in. Cue frustration on an industrial scale.

So I called the helpline and halfway through the recorded messages I discovered why: if you input your password incorrectly a number of times, the system locks you out. For two hours. So that will be why then…

Quite why the screen couldn’t tell me that I’m not sure.

Anyway, later in the afternoon, I duly logged on and filed my VAT return. It really is quite simple.
