BACK from a week’s break in Cornwall. And very pleasant it has been, too. We were lucky with the weather; although we had the odd hailstorm, and some heavy rain during the night, most of the time we were able to get out and enjoy a bracing walk along the beach in the sunshine – and the wind certainly knows how to blow off the Atlantic!
The Audi A6 has been great throughout. Highly comfortable, very economical and a delight to drive. So what have been the stand-out items?
The first must be the space. My son Matt – a six-footer – was able to luxuriate in the rear there is so much passenger space available. And you don’t often find that. And the boot. It’s huge. You could get lost in there.
Second, for the first time on holiday I’ve navigated using the sat-nav rather than reading from a map. It’s made life more relaxing. Although you shouldn’t dispense with a map I must add.
Third. Lack of interior oddment storage. If there is one thing lacking in the Audi, it’s somewhere to put anything. Rear seat passengers have the central arm rest with a large tray inside; and shallow door pockets. Otherwise, that’s it. Up at the front, there is the same shallow door pockets, and a central armrest, plus a couple of cup holders. The glove box is stuffed full of six-changer CD player, DVD player and iPod/iPhone connector – which are all fab, but there’s no room for further storage.
Four, great economy. On the way back home from Cornwall, it was a 45mpg average, once more with the car loaded up. The 2.0-litre engine has a wonderful reserve of torque – the low-down throttle response – that makes for smooth and relaxing driving, and great fuel economy.
