349 – Time is running out for your online tax return

End of January deadline fast approaching

I HATE to talk about tax on these pages – except when it means saving you tax – but the Self Assessment online deadline is fast approaching: if you still need to do your Tax Return you must do it online by 31 January. There are penalties if you don’t.

If you’re new to using HMRC Online Services, you will have to register for an online account. You will then be sent an Activation Code within seven days to activate your account.

Online filing is useful: it’s safe and secure, helps reduce errors, provides automatic calculations and an on-screen confirmation message when your return is received safely. It’s also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so it’s there at a time that suits you – if you’re like me, that means late at night!

If you need further help, including a ‘Step by Step’ guide to Self Assessment online filing and a bite-sized video, visit our special tax widget by clicking on the Law & Tax landing page – and then scroll down on the menus.

In the same place you will also find episode 4 of the ‘Start Up Diaries: highs and lows’, which details how Nick is dealing with the unexpected, Hannah plans ahead and Ruth takes on new challenges.

If you are self-employed, you might also like our Special Report on Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) – an ideal way for a sole trader to fund a new car.
