Gareth Powell: successfully challenged his speeding ticket thanks to in-van tracking technology

Vehicle tracking technology proves driver wasn’t breaking law

THIS is a great story. How vehicle tracking technology has successfully overturned a speeding ticket.

Gareth Powell, a van driver, was clocked doing 61mph in a 50mph limit on A4174 near Bristol in November last year, while he was working as an employee of MD Building Services Ltd.

But Gareth, convinced he wasn’t a speedster, contacted the vehicle tracking makers – in this case Navman Wireless – to ask them to confirm his speed: 48mph as it turned out. The judge overturned the case on the evidence from the tracking system.

What a great result – it shows that with a bit of persistence, and a belief in your own innocence (plus some third party technical help) – you can challenge such tickets. Otherwise Gareth could have had three points on his licence and been
