227 – Peugeot wins Le Mans

Share

15 June 2009

Team Peugeot Total did it – and secured its first victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours with the diesel-powered 908 HDi FAP.

Peugeot has won the classic 24 hour event twice before – in 1992 and 1993. The winners this time around were Spaniard Marc Gené, Australia’s David Brabham and Austrian driver Alexander Wurz. Peugeot also placed second with the pole sitting car of Sarrazin/Montagny/Bourdais.

Audi claimed third, though, Allan McNish guiding the new Audi R15 TDI to a podium place with Dindo Capello and Tom Kristensen.

“Obviously it was our aim to win and retain Audi’s fantastic Le Mans record, but it had to stop at some point as all good things do,” commented McNish in reflective mood after the race. “The competition from Peugeot has been fierce for the past two years but we came out on top. This time they got the better of us.”

Congratulations to Peugeot then. France must have been a very happy place last night!
