One of the items that comes with every Honda CR-V is standard Trailer Stability Assist (TSA). It ensures that, should your trailer start to ‘snake’, the TSA cuts in to straighten things out for you. It’s a useful safety feature.

Not that there’s been occasion to need TSA’s assistance yet. However, last weekend was the first opportunity for us to hitch up our new dinghy trailer and head off to an event: my son, Matt, is a keen dinghy sailor, and regularly sails a single-handed Topper. At the weekend it was the Surrey Schools Sailing Association event at Papercourt in Surrey, representing his Queen Mary Sailing Club.

I must admit to nerves setting off. This is the first time I’ve towed anything. But the CR-V’s lusty diesel engine pulled the boat and trailer along really as if it wasn’t there. Obviously you need to watch the extra length when turning corners. But most of the time you actually needed to remind yourself the trailer was present!

At the event, the extra versatility of the trailer was certainly welcomed. Although I haven’t fully mastered reversing with it
